Eight
students sustained injuries when police resorted to lathi-charge when
they tried to barge into collectorate during a protest here on
Thursday. The students led by SFI have been demonstrating near the
collectorate demanding release of pending scholarships and fees. They
grew restless when police did not allow them into the collectorate to
submit representation related to their demands. Heated arg-uments
ensued between the police and students and the police canned them when
the students tried barge into the office forcibly.
The students staged a sit-in on the road demanding the suspension of policemen who resorted to lathicharge. The injured have been rushed to hospital by their friends. Irked by the incident students squatted on the road before the collectorate and raised slogans against the government. On information, the district collector, Mr K. Ramgopal, came to the spot and held discussions with the union leaders. Students appealed to him to give a date for the release of scholarships and fees. SFI leaders T.Murali, Suresh, Sridhar, Venkateswarlu and others suffered injuries in the lathicharge and were shifted to hospital.
